Truss manufacturing has come a long way in the last 10 years.  New technology has changed the design and production of all types of trusses. Back in the day the designer would acquire a set of blueprints from the contractor and design the trusses by hand. Now the designer uses receives digital blueprints and utilizes computer / CAD software to help in the design of the trusses, saving both time and money.

There are three different arenas where truss producers provide trusses: commercial, residential and agriculture. Certain mfg.'s choose to specialize in just one of these areas and some choose to serve all three.  The same can be said about mfg.'s that make either wood and/or steel trusses.  Some producers make only wood trusses and some only specialize in steel trusses and some produce both.  Laura Corpe of Taylor Truss in Palmetto, GA says they produce both wood and steel trusses. Laura believes being versatile is key to getting jobs which equates to staying in business.

Today’s truss producer has many challenges to overcome.  Keeping up with constantly changing technology, competing with companies doing jobs for less than cost and trying to keep current customers from jumping ship over $50.  Dwight Webb of Truss Pros in Carrollton, GA says the main factor in getting jobs in today’s market is PRICE and being savvy with customer service. Another key to sustainability in today’s market is embracing all the outlets that help companies promote themselves with little cost to them.
